Benefits of Eating What’s In Season
Why eat seasonally? Because there are so many benefits to eating produce that is currently in season.
One of the best reasons to eat seasonally is that fruits and vegetables that are in season are usually so much cheaper. They don’t have to be stored as long so there aren’t storage fees to add to the cost.
Another reason to eat seasonal fruits and vegetables is that the flavor is so much better. Think ripe, juicy tomatoes and sweet watermelons in the summer, pumpkins and crisp apples in the fall.
In season produce is often fresher since it hasn’t had to travel as far. If it is in-season in your area, your local grocer may have been able to source the produce nearby. This means the fruits and vegetables generally retain more nutrients too.
A final benefit to eating seasonally is that you start to look forward to the first fruits of each season. The first strawberry of spring. The taste of your first summer tomato. That yummy pumpkin pie every fall… You really look forward to the changing of the seasons and the new foods it adds to your diet.
I Should Know Better…
Just last week I purchased a clamshell package of watermelon, honeydew, and cantaloupe. I should know better. But it looked so good sitting there on the grocery store shelf. So I purchased it anyway, even with the hefty price tag. Once home, I gingerly opened that package looking forward to the juicy taste of summer to help me get through the bleak winter days.
Sadly, it wasn’t what I expected. The watermelon was juicy, but had no taste. The cantaloupe was rock hard. The honeydew wasn’t any better. And I had just wasted money on something that didn’t satisfy my cravings. I would’ve been better off purchasing some crisp pears.
I know better than to buy out-of-season produce, but I did it anyway. And it was such a disappointment.
